Greenwood
is the smallest incorporated city in Canada and
is located along Hwy #3 between Grand Forks and
Midway Greenwood in the 1890's was a booming town
of mining, smelters and railroads. Today remnants
of the glory days remain for the history buff
and the small population now sits at approximately
700. In more recent memory Greenwood came to life
again as the backdrop as the movie location for
Snow Falling on Cedars.
Greenwood has been redeveloping it's Heritage Charm
and tourists can visit the Greenwood Museum for
information on walking tours, as well as information
on the old Phoenix Mine Site area.
Nearby
is Jewel Lake which is a welcome retreat for visitors
and locals alike. The area is full of wildlife
from deer, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, turtles
and a wide variety of birds. The Lake is now stocked
and in 1933 gave up a world record rainbow trout
at 42 pounds and a fork length of 42.5 inches!
In winter the area provides for excellent cross-country
skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice fishing.
Phoenix Mountain is a community ski hill in the
Phoenix Interpretive Forest of the South Okanagan
of British Columbia. It's run by the Phoenix Alpine
Ski Society and is located 11 km's to the east
of Greenwood.
